Spotlight on The Studio 26

It’s always a good thing when you find like-minded people to share in your passions. I discovered exactly that when I came across Studio 26 in Cameron Park, CA. It’s a jewelry-maker’s studio designed for learning, problem solving, creative sharing, inspiration and encouragement!

I have a few students that I run into in more than one place: various teaching locations, gems shows, art shows, etc. One of my favorite students has taken metal-working classes from me in both Chico (String Bead) and in Nevada City (Mana Beads). She often mentioned another studio, closer to Sacramento, where she was learning more in-depth jewelry fabrication. At a gem show in Sacramento last year, my booth just happened to be next to their booth (the synchronicity makes me smile). My friend was there and introduced me to Dan Bender, the owner and primary instructor at The Studio 26. We had a great conversation about teaching and jewelry-making and eventually he scheduled me as one of their guest instructors. I would like to share with you what they’re all about and encourage you to check them out!

What can I find at Studio 26?

Cameron Park is located midway between Placerville and Folsom. Dan and his group have been teaching jewelry making to people in the Sacramento area for decades and are worth the drive if you are coming from the foothills like me. The studio features two class areas including about 14 stations, 8 Foredom flexshafts. There is a dizzying array of tools and equipment, and all the supplies you might need for your projects. With Dan as your guide, you can learn basic fabrication skills, stone cutting, casting, stone setting and much more. He also offers regular Open Studio sessions to accomplish individual work and for troubleshooting.

Dan is a certified bench jeweler who appreciates the opportunity to share his knowledge with hobbyists and professionals alike. In addition, he is a treasure trove of information, skill and problem solving. On more than one occasion, I’ve seen him come to the rescue to help recover a seemingly impossible mistake. He is the primary instructor at Studio 26, teaching the bulk of the introductory workshops and project classes. He is joined by Charlene – a marvel at organizing, designing, creating and managing things around the studio – and a group of guest instructors like myself. Right off the bat, I was drawn to the collaborative atmosphere at Studio 26.
