Description
This is a slight variation on basic wire-wrapping techniques for making jewelry. Prong setting can come in handy for a few reasons. Rather than wire-wrap your stone with lots of wire and decoration, using prongs offers a smaller footprint and are perfect for small stones or when you want a more delicate setting. If you DO want a lot of wire decoration and embellishment, knowing how to make wire wrapped prongs will get you a cleaner base for the more decorative work.
The basic technique offered in this tutorial can be expanded with a little experimentation into prong settings for rings, faceted stones and more.
INSTRUCTIONS ONLY – no materials included. This handout includes easy to understand photographs to help with instruction.
Skill Level: Easy-Intermediate Wire Working. I teach this to beginners all the time so it’s not very hard to accomplish, but if you’ve never picked up a pair of pliers before, it might prove to be challenging.
